PwC and OpenAI want agents in the close. A person still signs.

Today’s finance headline is not a new ledger. It is PwC and OpenAI building agents for planning, payments, tax, and the accounting close — with human oversight written into the pitch.

OpenAI and PwC announced a collaboration to put AI agents on the operating rhythm of finance: forecast, procurement, treasury, tax, and month-end. They are selling it to the office of the CFO. Codex, they say, already helped OpenAI’s own team process more contracts with the same headcount. The close is on the list.

Yesterday Deloitte’s Finance Trends 2027 said the quiet part: 95% of finance leaders will allow agentic workflows in some work. Only 14% will let agents take critical decisions on their own. That gap is the job. Agents draft. A named person posts.

If you run QuickBooks or Xero, this is not a reason to buy a second close product this week. Intuit already has Books Upkeep and an Accounting Agent. Xero already has JAX rec and a month-end agent in early access. PwC is packaging the same pattern for enterprises that still live in SAP and Oracle. The rule does not change with the logo: one book of record, one inbox per job, a reviewer who can explain the number.

Do not let a ChatGPT window become the general ledger because a Big Four press release made it sound official. Connectors are query surfaces. Journals post in the software you already pay for.

Helix is the map of which of those switches is already on in your file. Walk the sample. License the ledger. Free questionnaire if you want a first look: jgpulse.com. I’m Joy, JG Pulse.
